Spring 2010. "The Youngest Eagle" is published in Isotope: A Journal of Literary Nature and Science Writing. This essay deals with mercury contamination in New England's waterways, and recounts my experiences accompanying wildlife biologists in the field.

October 2009. Two short essays, "Morning Glories" (originally published in the journal Appalachian Heritage) and "Weapons," appear in the book Appalachia's Last Stand: The Appalachian Mountains Must Not Be Sacrificed for Cheap Energy, compiled by an Appalachian consortium of writers and photographers and published by Wind Publications. Fall 2009. "Fall Migration" appears in Pine Mountain Sand and Gravel, the literary journal of the Southern Appalachian Writers Cooperative. The essay is part of a special issue on vultures.

Winter 2008. Memoir piece "Goose" is published in a special issue of Now & Then focusing on "wildness" in Appalachia.

Fall 2007. Personal essay "Lost" appears in The Fourth River, a journal of nature and culture published by the creative writing program at Chatham College (Rachel Carson's alma mater). "Lost" is featured as the creative nonfiction example from the current issue on the journal's website. (The editors of The Fourth River nominated "Lost" for a Pushcart Prize!)

Spring 2007. Personal essay "Away from Home" appears in a special Southern Appalachian issue of the journal Rivendell.

December 2006. Short piece "Morning Glories" reprinted in Winds of Change, the newsletter of the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition.

Fall 2006. Personal essay "Ghosts in the Woodshed" in Ecotone: Reimagining Place, published by the University of North Carolina-Wilmington's MFA program.

Spring 2006. Personal essay "With Hurt Hawks" appears in Fourth Genre 8.1. This essay is dedicated to Snow and Orion, two non-releasable hawks who reside at the West Virginia Raptor Rehabilitation Center.

Fall 2005. Personal essay "The Vulture Tree" appears in River Teeth. This essay explores public distaste for vultures and explains my fascination with them.

Summer 2005. Memoir piece "Morning Glories" appears in Appalachian Heritage. This short piece expresses my anger about a new coal-fired power plant scheduled to be built near Cheat Lake, West Virginia, where I lived until the summer of 2004.

Spring 2001. Personal essay "Cave Darkness" appears in Touchstone and wins their Graduate Student Creative Nonfiction prize.

2000-present. Numerous articles in The Falcon, the quarterly newsletter of the West Virginia Raptor Rehabilitation Center.
